Statement by Iceland (no 88 of 105)

Mr. President,

Iceland welcomes the delegation of Libya and its national report.

In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

  1. Abolish the death penalty and ratify the Second Protocol to the ICCPR.
  2. Amend the Penal Code to criminalize all forms of violence against women and repeal discriminatory laws, including the male guardianship system, in line with international human rights standards
  3. Repeal article 375 of the Penal Code, which mitigates the penalties of so-called “honour crimes”
  4. Criminalize marital rape.
  5. Decriminalize and legalize abortion.
  6. Decriminalize same-sex relations between consenting adults.
  7. End discrimination against persons of diverse SOGIESC and revise laws restricting expression and association based on SOGIESC.

I wish Libya all success for its review.

I thank you.
