HRC61 - Iceland GC - A/HRC/61/L.19: Advancing Human Rights in South Sudan
Human Rights Council – 61st Session
General Comment on draft resolution L.19
Advancing Human Rights in South Sudan
Statement by Iceland
27 March 2026
Mr. President,
Iceland would like to thank the United Kingdom, Albania, Ireland and Norway for presenting draft resolution L.19 on advancing human rights in South Sudan.
Iceland remains deeply concerned by the human rights situation in South Sudan, including recent reports of intensifying violence against civilians, prevalent conflict related sexual and gender-based violence, mass displacement and damage to critical water infrastructure. These ongoing developments underscore the urgency for sustained international attention and engagement.
In this context, Iceland sees the extension of the mandate of the Commission of Human Rights in South Sudan as a critical tool to promoting and protecting human rights in the country. With its investigative and evidence-preserving functions, the Commission plays an important role in facilitating transitional justice and accountability. Further, the work of the Commission compliments national and regional efforts aiming towards lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.
In this regard, Iceland supports resolution L.19 and urges others to do the same.
I thank you.
