Statement by Iceland

Mr. President,

Iceland welcomes the delegation of Somalia and its national report.

In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

1. Abolish the death penalty and ratify the Second Optional Protocol to the ICCPR.
2. Criminalize all forms of gender-based violence (GBV), including marital rape, and establish survivor-centred response protocols and structured referral pathways.
3. Eradicate female genital mutilation.
4. Eliminate child marriage nationwide.
5. Decriminalize abortion and guarantee access to safe abortion in law and practice.
6. Decriminalize same sex relations between consenting adults.

We wish Somalia all success for its review.
